Really experiencing tropical rainforest is still possible. The Ivindo-expedition, which Transjungle is offering in summer 2008, is just about that.
It makes you feel the virgin jungle of Central Africa. There are no human settlements, no villages, no roads or paths. The world is green, interspersed with water. There are, however, many jungle elephants and wild boar. Bongo and sitatunga (types of antilope) live here along with many types of ape. This expedition aims to cross the forest from the Kongou waterfalls in the Ivindo river to the Langoué bai, an open swampy area in the forest. Our route has been followed earlier by Michael Fay for National Geographic in 2000. As we get closer to the bai, we will be tracing families of gorilla's. They come to the bai particularly for the lush grass, that is to be found there.
We will be accompanied by people who know the forest. The local branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Minkebe), with whom we cooperate closely, gives us advice in working out our route and suggests local guides. She wants to promote a form of ecotourism in the region. We are supporting this.
An informative meeting about our trip is planned on 8 june 2008.
You can follow our Inselbergs trip of 2007 with Google Earth or take a look at impressions of the past years.
